For many travelers visiting Italy, shopping is part of the journey.
Before leaving the European Union, there is one important thing you should not forget:
Tax Refund.
Over the past few years, I have accompanied my family through the tax refund process at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). I’ve seen travelers finish in ten minutes, and others nearly miss their flights because they weren’t familiar with the procedure.
This guide summarizes my personal experiences from 2023 to 2026 and is intended to help travelers enjoy a smoother departure from Rome.
The Most Important Thing Before Requesting a Tax Refund
Complete Online Check-In First
This is a small detail many travelers overlook, but it can save a significant amount of time. For families planning their trip, also check out our Rome with Kids guide for family-friendly tips on getting around.
Most airlines allow online check-in 24–48 hours before departure.
Once completed, you will receive:
- Your boarding pass
With your boarding pass ready, you can proceed directly to the tax refund area at the airport without first lining up at the airline check-in counter.
This is especially helpful if you have checked luggage.
Where Is the Tax Refund Area at Rome Fiumicino Airport?
If you are departing from:
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
and leaving the European Union, follow airport signs for:
- Tax Refund
- VAT Refund
- Customs
- Customs Validation
Step 2: Sort Your Tax Refund Forms
The night before every departure, I always organize tax refund documents by refund company.
You only need the tax refund forms themselves.
No envelopes or credit card receipts are required.
The three most common tax refund companies in Europe are:
Global Blue
The most widely used tax refund provider in Europe.
Many luxury brands work with Global Blue.
Planet Tax Free
Formerly known as Premier Tax Free.
Also very common throughout Europe.
Tax Refund
Used by selected brands and department stores.
Organizing your forms beforehand makes the airport process much smoother.
Step 3: Process Refunds by Company
My Preferred Method: Global Blue Credit Card Refund
If your form is issued by Global Blue and you choose:
Credit Card Refund
you can often use the self-service kiosk instead of waiting in line for an agent.
One personal habit I recommend:
I usually save Global Blue for last.
The reason is simple.
The kiosks are often much faster than staffed counters.
While other refund companies may require waiting in line, Global Blue can often be completed within minutes.
Cash Refund or Credit Card Refund?
One of the most common questions.
Cash Refund
Pros
- Receive money immediately
- More satisfying for many travelers
Cons
- Usually requires waiting at a staffed counter
- Longer queues
Credit Card Refund
Pros
- Some providers offer self-service kiosks
- Much faster process
Cons
- Processing fees may apply
- Refund can take several weeks to appear
My personal opinion:
Time is often more valuable than the refund amount itself.
At Rome Airport, your most valuable resource is usually time.
Don’t Underestimate Security and Passport Control
This is probably the most important advice I can give.
Many travelers focus entirely on tax refunds and forget about:
- Baggage drop-off
- Security screening
- Passport control
- Walking to the departure gate
During peak travel seasons, security alone can take over an hour.
Combined with tax refund queues, you may find yourself running through the airport.
That is rarely the memory you want to take home from Rome.
If Your Purchases Were Made Outside Italy
This is where many travelers become confused.
Imagine you visited:
- France
- Spain
- Germany
and then fly home from Rome.
In that case, you must first complete:
Customs Validation
because Rome is your final point of departure from the European Union.
Even if you purchased the item in Paris, customs validation must be completed in Rome before receiving your refund.
The process is:
Customs Validation
↓
Customs Stamp
↓
Tax Refund Company
↓
Refund Completion
This step is often the most time-consuming part of the process.
If you have refund forms from other EU countries, make this your first priority upon arriving at the airport.
Quick Tax Refund Checklist
✓ Complete online check-in before arriving
✓ Sort refund forms by company
✓ Keep passport and boarding pass ready
✓ Know which suitcase contains refund items
✓ Allow plenty of extra time
✓ Prioritize customs validation for purchases made outside Italy
My Personal Experience (2023–2026)
Everything in this guide comes from my own experiences assisting family members through tax refunds at Rome Fiumicino Airport between 2023 and 2026.
Airport procedures, tax refund policies, and customs requirements can change.
Before traveling, always verify information with:
- Italian Customs
- Rome Fiumicino Airport
- Your tax refund provider
Official information should always take priority.
The Best Things We Bring Home Aren’t Always What We Bought
Every time I accompany family members through the tax refund process, I see luggage carts filled with luxury purchases, gifts, and souvenirs.
Years later, however, we rarely remember how much a handbag cost.
What we remember are the people we traveled with.
The mornings spent sharing coffee under the Roman sun.
The afternoons walking together along cobblestone streets.
Those moments stay with us far longer.
