Rome is a city with four seasons, each with different light and temperatures, like a book slowly turning its pages. Winter really does get cold here, summer really does get hot, but it’s never extreme enough to overwhelm you—it just reminds you to bring the right clothes so you can truly slow down and feel this city with peace of mind.
Rome’s Four Seasons: Approximate Months and Temperatures (2026 Reference Averages)
Rome has a Mediterranean climate—cool and damp winters, hot and dry summers, with spring and autumn being most comfortable. Here’s the monthly range (average high/low in °C):
Winter (December – February)
Average high 12–14°C, low 3–5°C.
The coldest months (January-February) occasionally get light rain or cloudy skies, and it feels even colder when it’s windy. The sun sets early (around 4–5 PM), but on sunny days, the blue sky and ancient ruins have especially crisp light and shadows.
Spring (March – May)
Average high 15–23°C, low 5–12°C.
March starts warming up, April and May have more sunshine, beautiful flowers bloom, and the air is fresh—many people’s favorite season.
Summer (June – August)
Average high 27–31°C, low 16–18°C.
July and August are the hottest, with strong sunlight from 11 AM to 3 PM—so hot you don’t want to go outside. But the sun sets late (still light after 9 PM), making dusk and night perfect for walks, dinner, and a Spritz.
Autumn (September – November)
Average high 22–27°C, low 11–15°C.
September still carries summer’s warmth, October is cool and comfortable, November starts getting colder with more rain, but the light becomes soft—perfect for photography.
Rome Four-Season Fashion Tips
Spring & Autumn
Light long-sleeves + windbreaker / lightweight leather jacket / denim jacket. There’s a big temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring a thin scarf or light jacket—layering is most comfortable.
Summer
Tank tops, dresses, short sleeves, shorts (extremely hot at noon, better to walk in shade). Remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen—it’s best to stay indoors or in shade from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Winter
Thick wool coats, down jackets, warm base layers, scarves, and beanies are essential. Especially when it’s windy, wearing a beanie makes wind feels like a huge difference—the it chills you to the bone, but putting on a beanie instantly warms you up.
Rome’s winter may be cold, but it rarely snows; summer may be hot, but mornings and evenings are cool, and walking and eating gelato at night is super comfortable.
As long as you bring the right clothes, you can leave time for what really matters.
