Last Updated: May 27, 2026|Focusing on Rome and nationwide strikes affecting Rome transportation
Rome is a city best enjoyed at a slow pace.
But if this is your first time doing a free & easy trip to Italy, you might soon encounter one thing — Strikes (Sciopero).
In Italy, transportation strikes are actually quite common. Especially:
- Rome Metro
- Buses
- Trams
- Trenitalia (National Railways)
- Airport & Aviation systems
This doesn’t mean the city is bad — it’s simply a common way for Italian workers to voice their demands.
Momento has compiled this 2026 Rome Transportation Strike Calendar
Not to make you anxious about your trip,
but to help you prepare in advance so you can travel with less stress.

What is a Transportation Strike in Italy?
For first-time visitors to Italy, “Why is there another strike?” can be surprising.
But for locals, strikes are a fairly common form of labor protest.
Unions often use temporary suspension of services to express dissatisfaction with salaries, working conditions, etc.
Instead of complaining, it’s better to understand and prepare for it.
What’s Most Annoying About Rome Metro Strikes?
Many travelers think strikes only mean “fewer services.”
But in Rome, metro strikes often mean:
- Stations are completely closed with metal gates shut
- You literally cannot enter the station
Buses are more unpredictable — some drivers show up, some don’t.
Practical Tips When Strikes Happen
1. Reduce reliance on public transport
Especially metro and buses — they have the highest uncertainty.
2. If you need to catch a train the next day, move to Termini area the night before
This is our sincerest advice.
If you need to take a national train, go to another city, or catch a flight, change your accommodation to near Roma Termini station the night before.
Walking to the station is much less stressful than dragging luggage while worrying.
3. Uber & taxis are not always reliable
During strikes, it’s very hard to find taxis on the street.
Uber may be an option, but prices can surge and availability is uncertain.
4. Check official information 1–2 days before
Strike announcements can change quickly. Always double-check before departure.
Small Tip: Strikes often happen on Fridays and Mondays
This is something many travelers don’t know.
Major transportation strikes frequently fall on Friday or Monday.
So if you plan to take public transport on these days, remember to check the latest strike calendar.
This article will be updated regularly to serve as your little helper for traveling in Rome.
